![]() ![]() In Cube World, you will find a freedom that isn't readily available in many other RPGs. Towns, caves, castles, and other points of interest are there for you to investigate (at your own peril). Each world is packed with nooks and crannies. In Cube World, if you can see a tree, mountain, ocean, or rooftop, you can explore it. ![]() There are no borders, no invisible walls, and no limitations on where you can go. Worlds in Cube World are essentially endless when you reach the border of your current zone, a new zone is generated from one of the game's biomes. In other words, the environment in which you are adventuring is created on the fly. The world of Cube World is procedurally generated. Perhaps the most impressive part of Cube World is how it manages to pack so much interesting visual data into so limited a package you wouldn't think that clouds and trees made out of cubes could be pretty, but Cube World offers solid evidence to the contrary. Characters range from adorable to downright ugly, and environments run the gamut from swamp to lava to forest. The voxel-block design creates a world that is simultaneously simple and complex. Cube World is an adventure game, and fans of MMOs will find it far closer to World of Warcraft or Guild Wars 2 than it is to the game that threatens huts with Creepers and allows you to build full-scale replicas of pretend spaceships.Ĭube World is unique, and even in alpha, it's something quite special.Ĭube World's aesthetics are charming and warm and will no doubt be the first thing you notice upon logging in. Minecraft is a crafter's paradise, a world where you can build anything you can imagine. "If you've played one cube-based game," says the veteran gamer who lives in your brain, "you've played them all."ĭespite the visual similarities, however, Cube World and Minecraft are extremely different games. It has the same blocky appearance and voxel design of Mojang's money-printing sandbox, and though the color palette is brighter and the graphics more crisp, it would be easy to dismiss the title as a "me-too" copycat. Like a tortoise made of blocks on roller skates made of blocks trundling up Block Mountain, but it's getting there.From an outsider's perspective, Picroma's Cube World might look like yet another Minecraftclone. That said I really like the sound of it, and things look to be progressing solidly too.įor now the new quest system is still very much a work-in-progress, and - predictably - there's no release date. Hopefully that all works out, as it could end up confusing or frustrating if not done with utmost care. It makes finding the quest target part of the quest itself and leads to a much more immersive gameplay." Some NPCs give hints about quests that haven't been discovered yet. By removing all quest markers from the map, players are forced to study the world around them more actively rather than following an icon on the map. The journal is updated automatically by fighting, finding items or talking to NPCs. "We added a quest journal with quest objectives and previews of creatures and items. Maybe the boss will drop a key or a treasure which is needed for another quest. you might find an old crypt and when you enter it, there is a skeleton boss that you have to defeat. Quests are just there and players can find them by exploring. "We made the system more exploration-based: we removed quest-givers and also removed all markers from the world map. People felt forced to simply visit quest-givers, the developers claim. Originally Cube World had a rather bog standard MMO-style quest system - go here, talk to this glowing exclamation point with a person attached, etc - but this wasn't a good fit for its exploration.
